The nation's softest, weakest and most incompetently administered union, the LHMU in Victoria is under fire this morning over a publicity drive promoting an industrial campaign to get very low paid cleaners more pay.
At first glance, it was an astonishing turn-around for a union whose reputation for indolence and intrigue is vast and embarrassing. But concerned union insiders have blown the whistle on this deal, saying there's much less to it than meets the eye.
The Age's Ben Schneiders reports that the union has "won" a new deal for cleaners from "building owner ISPT" but fails to tell the whole story. What the supposedly quality newspaper neglects to reveal is that the union - through its industry superannuation fund HOST PLUS - is a key unitholder in ISPT which was established by union dominated industry funds to hold their property investments.
The Union - under the careerist control of young Socialist Left wannabe politicians like parliamentary aspirant Clancy Dobbyn seen above pushing a bin down Collins Street - has repeatedly let down its dwindling numbers of members in many areas, particularly cleaners.
SAVING FACE FOR THE UGLIES
What it presents a breakthrough is a window-dressing deal that helps the lazy union save face. The union's new and unelected leader, the snooty Jess Walsh PhD has never got her hands dirty cleaning up anything, other than the union's many internal scandals. She's been keen to show that her leadership of the disastrously run state branch is better than her incompetent millionaire predecessor Brian Daley. If this is the best she can do, she will be able to achieve the impossible, make him look good.
The union's leadership has always said that cleaners are very difficult to organise, a claim made by the lazy management of many unions and not supported by looking at comparable organisations in the US and England or other Australian unions which were able to do very well for their members in what were considered "low skill" jobs, whether it be in construction or warehouses.
With strong leadership, hardworking people and a clear vision, anything is possible. Under the LHMU's weak and highly politicised rule, the best they can do is fake deals with mates designed to make them look better than the lazy slugs they are.
Game on.
