THE ENEMY WITHIN: Catherine Deveny Insults and Undermines Women

The Age's nasty Catherine Deveny has launched a snide and horrible attack on the winner of this year's Gold Logie, Kate Ritchie.

She equated Ritchie's success with Sam Newman's stupid television antics, Troy Buswell's chair sniffing and most odiously the Austrian incest rapist/murderer Josef Fritzl.

Ritchie is apparently not the woman she is meant to be, according to The Age's columnist. Deveny claims that the actor is "dull, unthreatening and uninspiring." Her millions of fans obviously missed the memo on this.

She patronisingly slags the acclaimed actor:

Has Kate Ritchie broken new ground in creative endeavour, challenged outmoded cultural stereotypes or questioned the human condition? Is she brave? Is she smart? Is she funny? No, she's been on Home and Away for 20 years. And she's pretty. What a good girl.

Feminists do have a point about gender equality. I want a world where my niece has exactly the same opportunity to succeed as my nephews. Nothing else is acceptable.

WHAT DEVENY STANDS FOR IS AS UNDERMINING TO WOMEN AS ANY CHAIR-SNIFFING PIG

But Catherine Deveny's reactionary politics demands that all women deem all the men around them to be threatened by their success and be planning on paying them back by "killing them".

She is - we are reliably informed - a very highly paid columnist at The Age and a "favourite" of besieged editor in chief Jaspan. Far from being discriminated against for being - as she puts it - "a smart mouth" and "pushy", she is being rewarded very amply for a few hours work a week. She apparently pulls in a few grand a week for her stream of consciousness rants, a few grand a week more than I do for mine.

And even though I disagree with almost everything she writes, even though clearly her money would be better directed by the newspaper into news reporting, I can't help but think the better of her that she was able to get away with such a fine scam. Good for her.

But that's not the Ms Deveny's mind works.

If you're a woman who doesn't toe the line by acting in the manner she deems to be politically correct, you're a sell-out.

If you're a woman who believes that abortion isn't right, or in limited government, or free enterprise and or in keeping the streets safe from cop-bashing leftist goons who then pop up as Legal Aid lawyers, then you must clearly want to be furniture.

If you've attracted more flies with honey than with vinegar, then somehow you've complied with patriarchy and all your decades of long hours, memorising scripts, missing out on a normal school life to entertain the rest of us, making audiences laugh and cry while being compelled to know more counts for nothing.

Deveny is an angry leftist, which is her right. But this is one of her lowest and most despicable efforts. Just like the blokes she rightly identifies as pigs, she owes the victim of her hatred a sincere and immediate apology.

Game on.
